HOW TO AVOID OVER-PROCESSED BROWS & LASHES

Brow lamination is a perm for the eyebrows. The treatment gives a uniform shape by making all the hairs go in the same direction, giving a fuller, thicker look. If correct aftercare is followed, brow lamination lasts for up to 8 weeks.
Lash lifting is a perm for the eyelashes. The treatment gives natural lashes length and volume, creating a fuller, more enhanced look. If correct aftercare is followed, the treatment lasts for up to 8 weeks.
When performed correctly, brow lamination and lash lifting enhance facial features and create a darker, more defined look. However, if performed incorrectly, the treatments can damage the hairs and lead to over-processing...
Over-processing is when the Step 1 lifting cream used in brow laminations and lash lifts is kept on for longer than required, causing the hair to become dry, frazzled and – in extreme cases –damaged. The damage may not be visible immediately but can show up within the days post-treatment.
Please bear in mind that removing the Step 1 lifting cream does not stop the chemical process. The process does not stop until the Step 2 neutralising cream is applied. This is because the chemical has already entered the hair, so wiping off the cream alone does not affect the process still occurring inside the strands. It is common confusion that removing Step 1 alone stops the processing; this mistake can lead to over-processing.
Before beginning the treatment, you should assess the client's lash/brow density. Density refers to how thick the individual strands are, NOT how many hairs they have. This will determine how long you should leave Step 1 on. You should also stagger your timings depending on density. You can read more here.
You can test when the brow and lash hair become pliable to help avoid over-processing. By pulling a few lashes away from the shield, you will know if they have taken to the lift; if the lashes remain upright, the hairs are pliable. Likewise, running a mini mascara wand through the brows allows you to see if the hairs stay in the direction brushed; if they do, you know the hairs are pliable.
Another common cause of overprocessing is room temperature. The higher temperature in the summer can cause hairs to process quicker than in the winter months. You should adjust your timings accordingly. It is crucial to monitor how fast the hairs are taking to the formula in hotter weather to avoid over-processing. We have a blog going into more detail about staggered timing on our website.
Please ensure you do NOT use cling film with Beautiful Brows & Lashes products. Cling film traps heat, which acts as a catalyst to speed up the reaction, but BB's Brow & Lash Bomb works fast enough without this extra step. Using cling film in conjunction with BB's high-quality products can lead to overprocessing and hair damage.
Following the correct aftercare is the most important step to lengthen the life of a lash lift or brow lamination. It helps to prevent hair from becoming dry and unhealthy. Caring for the brows and lashes after treatment will help to retain moisture and strengthen the hairs.
At Beautiful Brows & Lashes, we have a number of aftercare options which you can gift or retail to your clients. One option is to give each client a sachet of Step 3 moisturising serum along with a spoolie for them to apply to the brows and lashes at night. They will get about 4 uses out of a single sachet.
Alternatively, you can buy our wholesale Duo Brow & Lash Toxx to retail to your clients at £15 per item. The Toxx is packed with biotin and keratin to keep hairs strong, building resilience in each strand and repairing them after treatment. The serum is also enriched with castor oil for shine and healthy strands. Duo Brow & Lash Toxx will leave brows and lashes augmented with nutrients and essential oils. Additionally, you could retail our Brow & Lash Rehab Cold Pressed Castor Oil for £12.95. Castor Oil can be applied to the brows and lashes 48 hours after treatment.
